RADFORD – Kindergarteners at McHarg Elementary School recently got the chance to experience a wealth of scientific fields of study during a field trip to Radford University.
Dr. Rhett Herman, Physics professor and Director of the Radford University Planetarium, has been arranging these Science Days for years, arranging for a local K-12 school group to visit RU’s Artis College of Science and Technology for activities in the Planetarium, Museum of the Earth Sciences, and other activities.
“These visits are always great because it gets the kids exposed to things they don’t normally see, no one has to test them on the material that they learn – which is a win for everyone – and it really gets them excited about science at a young age,” said Herman.
The teachers and students alike had a great time with their day of science.
“McHarg’s Kindergarten field trip to Radford University was spectacular,” said kindergarten teacher Lindsay Lesko. “The students were able to experience hands-on, real-world learning that they could not get in many other places.”
“The professors and staff who guided us throughout the day were engaging, organized, and well prepared to teach our classes,” she continued. “The students got a taste of anatomy, astronomy, geology, and even took a test to see if they were zombies! Between taking organs and eyeballs apart to flying through outer space in the planetarium, our students will remember this field trip as one of the best ever.”
