A former Radford High School (’21) hurler is on the move.
Alex Kanipe will play this coming fall at Butler.
He spent last season at Bluefield State, where he pitched 72.2 innings with an 8-3 record, 3.84 earned run average, 89 strikeouts and only 27 walks. The 6-2, 200-pound rightie also held opposing batters to a .252 clip.
Kanipe cited the Butler coaching staff for a recent in choosing the school.
“They (the coaches) can help me to get where I want to be, and also, Butler is a very good academic school,” he said.
Kanipe, who previously started his career at Patrick Henry Community College, has summer league experience with the Martinsville Mustangs. So far this season, he has pitched 22.2 innings with a 1-0 record, 4.36 ERA and 24 strikeouts.
Butler University is a private university in Indianapolis, Indiana. Butler’s athletic teams, known as the Bulldogs, compete in Division I of the NCAA. In 2013, Butler became a founding member of the reconfigured Big East Conference.
The baseball team finished 20-25 this past spring with only a 5-16 record in the conference.
“My goals on the diamond are to help Butler win a Big East title, get to the professional level and impact my teammates and people around me in a positive way,” Kanipe said.
At Butler, Kanipe plans on majoring in either engineering or business.
