Katy Hoover is the new scoring leader in girls’ basketball at Christiansburg High School.
The four-year varsity player pumped in 23 this past week against Blacksburg to move into first place with 1,252 points. She passed Daniele Motley who had held the mark for several years.
This weekend, she reflected on her journey. The 5-7 senior told her father when she was just a freshman she would set the record someday.
She has, and was excited when it happened, running across the floor to hug her father.
“It was amazing,” she said.
Hoover was honored at half court with a banner and game ball.
Her coach, KC Shrader, pointed out Hoover had this goal in mind since she surpassed her 1,000-point milestone last year.
“I believe this record is a little more special since it was broken during one of our biggest games of the year with such a huge crowd,” he said. “She’s worked hard all season for this and being able to put her name in the record books with Motley who played at Wofford is something special.”
The Blue Demons still have over half their schedule left to play this season, thus giving Hoover plenty of opportunity to add to the mark.
She would not tip her hat but says she has been contacted by several colleges about playing at the next level.
