Hokies step on field for spring workouts

The questions are both on and off the field as the Virginia Tech football team begins spring practice.

Two new coordinators will try to change the team’s fate, while trying to please disappointed fans from this past season. There is also the question of who will be under center as the injured Kryon Drones is back and healthy. Pop Watson is standing in the wings after leading the team on the field in the last two games and a bowl appearance.

Heading into head coach Brent Pry‘s fourth season at the helm, Virginia Tech football is eager to get back out on the field following its winter offseason conditioning program.
The program, which is tabbed Hunger Drills, marks Phase One of the team’s steps leading up to its fall season.
During the last two months of those early morning workouts, Pry shared how the team did.
“I’m pleased with how phase one went,” Pry said in a press conference Tuesday. “Coach Ferg [Jarrett Ferguson] and his staff and their efforts have been outstanding. I’m very pleased there. The competition and new talent … I’m excited about all of that. But it’s time to get on the field.”

This team, which welcomed 29 newcomers in January from both the transfer portal and high school early enrollees, has shown a hunger and willingness to learn that should translate to the field come Wednesday, marking its first practice.
The Hokies will practice 15 times during spring ball, the maximum amount for FBS programs, and will learn a new playbook for both offense and defense, with new coordinators implementing their systems in Blacksburg. Philip Montgomery will lead the offense, a heralded offensive coordinator, and Sam Siefkes will run the defense, coming most recently from the Arizona Cardinals as a linebackers coach.

Tech will hold its annual Spring Game, presented by PMSI, in Lane Stadium on Saturday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
