The 19th Asian Games took place from Sept. 24-29 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Aquatic Sports Arena with two Hokies competing. Alumnus Ian Ho represented Hong Kong and current Tech sophomore Tanish George Mathew represented India.
With a stellar performance in the 50 freestyle, Ho clinched his first international podium finish. He placed second with a time of 21.87.
George Mathew left the Asian Games with two Indian national records. The first one was in the 4×100 freestyle relay. The team placed sixth with a time of 3:21.22; George Mathew’s split time was 49.97. The second Indian national record was in the 800-freestyle relay. The team placed seventh with a time of 7:29.04; George Mathew’s split time was 1:51.13. In his other events, George Mathew placed fifth in the 400-medley relay and 12th in the 100 freestyle.
The Asian Games is a multi-sport event that is held every four years with athletes across Asia. There are over 60 events competed throughout the event. In addition to swimming and diving, other events include archery, baseball, chess, karate, sailing and table tennis.
