Virginia Tech softball added another player to their 2020-21 roster Friday when Morgan Overaitis announced she was transferring to the Hokies from Michigan.
Overaitis will enroll for the fall semester and be eligible to play this upcoming season. The incoming sophomore started 14 games for the Wolverines before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.
“Morgan comes to us from a highly successful program and was one of the best high school players in the country,” Hokies head coach Pete D’Amour said. “Besides her reputation, I really didn’t know who Morgan was before she contacted me. After speaking with her, it was clear that she has the drive, grit, and attitude of a player that could thrive in our program.
“As I always do when we welcome new players, I want to thank Morgan and her family for believing in what we’re trying to build in Blacksburg. I think the Hokie faithful will enjoy watching her play,” D’Amour said.
A native of Canton, Mich., Overaitis played in 51 games in her two-year career with the Wolverines. She started games in right field, second base and designated player. She hit .277 in the shortened season, including a 3-for-3 game versus Florida in which she scored two runs.
Prior to her time in Ann Arbor, Overaitis was a standout player at Salem (Mich.) High School, earning All-State first-team honors all four years. She had a career .586 batting average, hit a school-record 38 home runs and drove in 223 runs.
Overaitis was the 2018 Detroit (Mich.) Free Press Softball Player of the Year and was the No. 18 prospect on FloSoftball’s 2018 Hot 100 Rankings.
Overaitis has played travel ball with the Beverly Bandits as they won the 2017 PGF National Championship. She was named a 2018 PGF Central Region All-American.
