The Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center will celebrate local history with historical re-enactments, craft, dance, music and pie from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday on the museum lawn in Christiansburg (200 S Pepper St.).
“It’s a day when we offer the grounds of the house to the community to celebrate. We have crafters, a lot of activities for children,” Museum Director Sue Farrar said.
Free and open to the public, the annual event that will range through the gardens, lawn, gazebo and porches of the handsome 1852 farmhouse started “ages and ages ago” Farrar said. There will be 28 crafters turning wood, weaving baskets, spinning wool and weaving and hooking rugs, and hundreds of people come every year.
The pie contest welcomes everyone, including children. Simply submit your pie to the judges before 1 p.m.
Activities celebrate past and future of the community in activities ranging from fiber arts, Legos, robotics and pie. Model A cars, drivers in skimmer hats and cloches, will parade and farm animals will remind us of our agricultural roots.
“We never know what we’ll get – goats, llamas… They’ll let me know the day before,” she said. “It’s always a surprise.”
It is an information-packed event, where genealogists will be available for local history insight. Virginia Tech entomology department will be present for bee keeping and honey.
“We have a little place for digging gold,” Farrar said. “Did you know Montgomery County has gold mines?”
Sponsor Home Depot is bringing wood-crafting kits for kids.
“They love to hammer,” Farrar said.
Food is culture, and Heritage Day revels in edibles. There will be hot dogs, beans, slaw and corn bread.
The pie bake-off includes a children’s prize.
“The most memorable pie was a peach cream cheese pie. It was like a flower,” Museum Curator Sherry Wyatt said. “Another had four pounds of blueberries. Some are savory and it’s free to enter.”
