Doris Fricke Hendrickson, 86, of Annandale, passed away Sept. 9, 2025.
Doris was born in Portland, Oregon to Fred and Tacy Fricke on March 19, 1939. She was raised in Denver, Colorado and Omaha, Nebraska. She married Robert Michael Hendrickson on Sept. 21, 1963 in Philadelphia, Penn. Doris graduated from Iowa State University, attended Chicago Theological Seminary where she met her future husband, and later earned her Masters of Library Science & Information Systems from Vanderbilt University. She worked as a Head Start Teacher in Ironto, Va., a librarian for Radford City Library, briefly for Virginia Tech’s Newman Library, and for over 20 years through her retirement leading library automation for Radford University’s McConnell Library.
Throughout her life, Doris practiced God’s will in the service to others. In addition to the many ways Doris served among the warm and vibrant congregations of Valley View Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Presbyterian Church of Radford, she offered her time, talents, and treasures to good causes including Beans and Rice, Meals on Wheels, Radford Clothing Bank and Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley.
Doris was the sweetest of souls and made the most of her gifts. She was a loving, kind and gentle mother and grandmother taking pride in her family; an exceptional cook to the enjoyment of countless; a musician playing piano, guitar, and singing in choirs in addition to her children and grandchildren; a seamstress sewing clothes for her little ones, their dolls & stuffed animals; a gardener keeping her connected to God’s earth; a competitive game & card player; an active walker through parks and community; and an avid reader inspiring generations of readers. Doris loved to travel on family vacations across the country, trips to Europe & Asia, and she was an avid beach lover.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents Fred and Tacy Fricke; brother Jerry Fricke; sister Carol Fricke Gibson; and beloved husband Reverend Doctor Robert “Bob” Michael Hendrickson.
Doris is survived by her children Lisa Hendrickson (Victor), Karla Gill, David Hendrickson (Mishelle); grandchildren Patrick and Noelle Marie Gill and Chloe Ava Hendrickson; and nieces and nephews
A Celebration of Life Reception will be Saturday, Sept. 20 3-5 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, Backlick Road Springfield, Va.
Funeral services will be held 3pm Friday, Sept. 26, 2025 at the Presbyterian Church of Radford in Radford VA.
In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in memory of Doris to Presbyterian Church of Radford Necessities Pantry for those in need in the City of Radford.
