Growing The Future Program grows even more

For seven years, local elementary, middle, and high schools have partnered with Shelor Motor Mile’s Growing the Future program, a community partnership designed to promote and facilitate fundraising for quality education in the New River Valley.

During the 2016-2017 school year, the Growing the Future program enrolled 43 schools in six surrounding counties – Craig, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Radford – helping over 25,000 students.

Shelor Motor Mile is excited to announce an expansion of the partnership for 2017-2018. Twelve schools in Wythe County will join the program.

The Growing the Future program consists of three main components: enrollment funds and donation cards, raffle tickets, and the annual high school talent show sponsored by Shelor Toyota.

The Donation Card Program plays a large part in helping to raise funds for the schools. When someone brings in a donation card from a school and purchases a vehicle, Shelor will donate $100 to that school. The program is open to all community members. Teachers in the enrolled school bring back $500 to their school, and all other school employees help send back $300 for every vehicle purchased from Shelor. During the 2016-2017 school year, over $70,000 went back to the schools from the Donation Card Program alone.

The second component is a raffle program. Shelor donates two vehicles per year to raffle off in a drawing. Raffle tickets cost one dollar and 100% of the raffle ticket money goes to the school. In 2016-2017, the schools sold over 120,000 raffle tickets.

The third and final – but maybe the most exciting! – piece of the Growing the Future partnership is the annual Talent Show sponsored by Shelor Toyota.

Each high school holds a school-wide contest that brings out the most spectacularly gifted individuals showcasing a range of special crafts. Two finalists from each high school then compete in the finale held in November. Over $50,000 of prize money is awarded to both schools and students.

“Wythe County Public Schools is excited to partner with Shelor Motor Mile and their Growing the Future program,” said a representative of the Wythe County School Board. “Shelor is excellent to work with and really cares about all students. In that way, we are a perfect match!”
