With profound sadness we announce the passing of Gretchen Aulbach Flynn, 76, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on Aug. 28, 2021.
She was the beloved wife of Jim Flynn, devoted mother of Gretchen Flynn Morris (Michael) and Jamie Flynn, and the proud grandmother to Claire, Spencer, Keagan, Colton, and Amelia. She was sister to Susan Aulbach and John Aulbach (Lisa). She also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Born in Chambersburg, Penn., to John and Jane Aulbach, she grew up in Blacksburg where her father was a professor at Virginia Tech. He is a graduate of Penn Hall Junior College and Old Dominion University.
Having lived all over the country, Jim and she came full circle back to Blacksburg to enjoy their retirement years which were filled wonderful times with her family and dear friends and quite a few Virginia Tech football and basketball games. She was very involved in the Blacksburg community through PEO International, a philanthropic organization in which women celebrate the advancement of women, the Virginia Tech Women’s Club, and Christ Episcopal Church. She was especially proud of her work with these organizations to promote educational scholarship opportunities for women.
Her love for her family and friends was displayed in her well-known hospitality and the unfailing help that she gave without regard to the time involved. Her friends and family will miss her calm guidance, sharp wit, and her incredibly warm spirit.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg, followed by funeral services. The burial service followed at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the PEO Program for Continuing Education, https://donations.peointernational.org American Cancer Society, www.donate3.cancer.org.
Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
