Caswell Proctor Graham, 95, of Christiansburg, Va., went to sleep at home, had sweet dreams and woke up in Heaven on July 11, 2019.
Cas was born on Oct. 7, 1923 in Princeton, W.Va. he graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1942. He joined the Army Air Force and fought in WWII, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He then attended VPI&SU and studied animal husbandry. He worked for the Department of Defense Logistics Agency and retired in 1990. During this time, he was excited to be contributing to history being made on the Apollo3 and Apollo 11 missions where Man went to the moon and then Man’s first steps on the moon. The astronauts then created something special for him that had landed on the moon, which we will treasure.
Left to cherish his precious memory are his wife of 68 years, Zelma; his son, Everett (Marty) Graham (Jewellyn) of Powhatan, Va.; his daughter, Susan Camper (Carl) of Riner, Va.; nephew, Thomas Bugg III (Susan) of Cincinnati, Ohio; nieces, Carolyn (Bev) Butter of Scottsville, Va.; and Virginia (Herschell) of Gordonsville, Va. and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Philip Mark; and only sibling, Dorothy Bugg (Thomas) of Scottsville, Va.
Cas joined St. Paul United Methodist Church when he was eight years old. He was the last charter member of the Izaak Walton League and member of the McDaniel Masonic Lodge #86 and past member of the NASA Apollo Quality Reliability Team.
He loved coaching youth sports, hunting, fishing and beekeeping, though he was much sweeter than any honey he could have ever robbed. We have not lost the leader of our family, for we know exactly where he is. We will miss your kind-hearted, giving spirit, the gentle pats on our back, the out loud “I love you”s, that constant, sincere, happy smile, and those beautiful, sparkling blue eyes. Our wish is that you yourself were able to reach out and touch that magical moon on your way. We will find out when we meet again.
Per his wishes there will be no visitation. There was a military graveside service on July 16, 2019 at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg.
In lieu of flowers, please take a child fishing.
