Dr. Leonard Raymond Gallimore, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 15, 2018 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice MacDonald Gallimore and their three children, Karen (Richard) Sandoe of Leesburg, Virginia, Mark (Betsy) Gallimore of Advance, North Carolina, and Cindy (Gary) Ouellette of Ellicott City, Maryland, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Marie Gallimore Chandler of Haughton, Louisiana, and Ann Gallimore Howard of Roanoke, Virginia.
An active member of Unity Christian Church, Leonard served the church in many capacities including Sunday School teacher, elder, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Elder Emeritus.
Leonard was a veteran, having served in the US Navy aboard the minesweeper USS Ruddy in the Sea of Japan at the end of World War II.
Born on Feb. 26, 1927, Leonard graduated from Sylvatus High School, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Milligan College, a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University, and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee. He was a teacher, coach, and principal of schools in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Leonard spent 17 years at Radford University, serving as director of admissions and professor of graduate education. Following his tenure at Radford, he was recruited to set up adult education programs at his alma maters Milligan College and East Tennessee State University.
An outstanding baseball and tennis athlete, Leonard also enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing, golfing, and gardening. His compassion and strong Christian faith were evident his entire life. A caring and loving person, Leonard was a role model for many and widely respected throughout the community.
The Gallimore family would like to thank Dr. Charles Judy and the entire Intrepid Hospice staff who were so very important to my husband, Leonard, and to us during the last weeks of his life. They were wonderful and were there for our every need. Sometimes before we even knew we needed something, they had anticipated it and had it there.
A special thanks to Shanna and to Jacqui as they were there more frequently, but to every one of the group as they were all top notch!

Family received visitors on August 19 at Unity Christian Church in Radford. A memorial service led by Rev. Wendy Wilson was held on August 20 at the church.
The Gallimore family was in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
