It’s not often a Hokie becomes a Highlander, but for J.D. Mundy that’s exactly what he will do this fall.
Mundy was highly recruited coming out of Northside High School and was a starter for the Virginia Tech baseball team this spring at first base.
He hit .257 with seven homeruns and 23 RBIs. Mundy has said he decided to transfer after being told he probably wouldn’t be a starter for the Hokies this coming year. He is following in the footsteps of his uncle, Kelly Dampeer who had a great career at RU.
Mundy will have to set out one year but will be back on the field in 2020.
I have to take time this week to say something about the outlandish 13th hole in the U.S. Open by Phil Mickleson Saturday.
Come on now, how many times have we all watched the movie, “Happy Gilmore,” and noticed the resemblance of the putt, thus wondering if that was in the back of his mind? How many times have you watched the movie?
Yes, Phil didn’t break his club in two or throw it into the pond, but he came close. I can understand his frustration. For many years, Phil was among the elite. Now, not so much.
The lack of winning has taken its toll on him, and it was nice to see even the big dogs get a little frustrated at the awful game just like us.
Phil finished with a 10 on the hole, and probably should have withdrawn just from the embarrassment. I say it just made him human, and it’s nice to have one of those moments.
But for the PGA, it was wrong. Just apologize Phil and move on. You deserve one mulligan in your career.
A satellite football camp at Christopher Newport University is producing some new offers from the Hokie staff. Several coaches were guest instructors this past week.
Wide receiver Bryce Carter from Thomas Dale High School in Chester impressed coaches enough to garner an offer. Tech was his first with UVA following suit a week later. He is a class of 2021 recruit.
One of the strongest, and maybe the biggest recruit, in the early returns in rising freshman Keith Miles Jr. At 6’4, 225, he has plenty of room to grow and on film is a monster for opposing offensive lines. The New Jersey defensive end has also gotten offers from Baylor, Michigan, UNC, Penn State and Rutgers.
Marquise Brunson (6’4, 270), a class of 2021 defensive tackle, has also received an offer from the Hokies. UVA has also made an offer to him as well.
Rising junior tailback Kaelon Black received a scholarship from the Hokies. The 5’9, 180-pound tailback from Virginia Beach is another member of the 2020 class. He has also received an offer from East Carolina. Last season, as a sophomore, he rushed for 1,245 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The basketball program is also making some noise.
The Hokies jumped back on the list of 6’8, 205 power forward Anthony Higgs of Baltimore after he de-committed from Ole Miss. The 2018 three-star athlete is also considering South Florida and Buffalo. He’s listed as the number 38 power forward in the country.
The Buzz gang has also offered Brenden Tucker (6’1, 170) point guard. Other notable offers to the rising senior from Dracula, Georgia, have come from Clemson, Georgia and Xavier.
