Floyd Center for the Arts announces a Call to Artists for Art Appalachia: 2020, a regional juried exhibition.
The Floyd Center for the Arts invites visual artists currently living and working in the geographical/cultural region of Appalachia to submit work to be considered for inclusion in Art Appalachia: 2020, a juried exhibition in Floyd, VA. Open to all artists 18 years of age or older currently living or working in the geographic area defined as Appalachia. Work must be original and executed within the past two years. All fine arts and fine craft media including painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, textiles, mixed media, photography, time-based/new media and installation are accepted. Deadline to apply is Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020 (Midnight, Mountain Standard Time). Cash prizes will be awarded.
During this exhibit, Juror Wendy Earle looks forward to discovering more about the breadth and depth of art as it is currently being practiced in this distinctly defined, yet increasingly diverse, region of the United States. Exhibit will be available virtually and for in-person viewing, and juror Wendy Earle will discuss her experience selecting the included works in a gallery talk in the Hayloft Gallery.
Earle is Curator of Contemporary Art at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC. Her interests include self-taught Southern artists, craft versus fine art and the intersection of art, science and technology. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she was interested in the study of art and culture from a very young age. She received her BA in art history from the University of Michigan and her MA in art history from the University of Texas at Austin. Wendy was previously the curator of collections and exhibitions at the Museum of the Southwest, and has interned at the Dallas Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museo Larco in Lima, Peru.
Spanning from Mississippi to New York, Appalachia’s geographic area is hosted by 13 states. It encompasses many majestic mountains, as well as sprawling forests, lakes, and rivers, and it is also home to a rich presence of artistic interests and abilities. Near the center of this region is The Floyd Center for the Arts, created 25 years ago by re-purposing a former dairy barn in beautiful Floyd County, VA.
