Doris Marie (Mickie) Matherly McKinney, a longtime resident of Treasure Island, Fla., died peacefully in her home on Aug. 26, 2021, at the age of 86.
Doris was born on June 15, 1935. She was raised in Christiansburg and Blacksburg, as an adopted daughter of the Matherly family. She graduated from Blacksburg High School, later married Lowell McKinney, and then traveled with him around the world as he served our country as part of the Air Force.
During her younger years, Doris raised two daughters, ensuring they had college educations, volunteered with the American Red Cross and worked as a church secretary at Balboa Union Church, Panama City, Panama Canal Zone. In her 60’s she worked as an administrative assistant at SmithKline Beecham in Pennsylvania.
After retiring, she traveled the world, visiting over 80 countries. During her senior years, she settled in Treasure Island where she enjoyed walking on the beach with her girlfriends, writing short stories and poems, crocheting, and cooking.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Mary Anna and Jahue Matherly of Blacksburg; three brothers, Carrol Matherly, Guy Matherly, and Rudolph Matherly; and two sisters, Ruth Sowers and Reba Fleshman.
Doris is survived by her husband, Lowell; her daughters Suzanne McKinney and Catherine Cox; her son-in-law Thomas Cox; and her grandsons Ian Crawford, John Cox, and Daniel Cox.
A private memorial service will be held to celebrate her life.
