Scammers are calling members of the community pretending to be court officials or the sheriff’s office, says Mongomery County Clerk of Circuit Court Tiffancy Couch.
“If you receive a call saying you missed jury duty and owe a fine, please contact the sheriff’s office immediately,” said Couch in a written statement. “Additionally, the circuit court clerk’s office oversees collecting fines/costs for the court and will not call you asking for payment. When this happens keep yourself and your loved ones safe and do not pay these scammers anything.”
Couch recommends taking the following actions:
- Contact the sheriff’s office directly at 540-382-6915 or go in person.
- Contact the circuit court clerk’s office directly at 540-382-5760 ext. 7 option 6 or go in person.
- Always go inside the sheriff’s office or the courthouse and directly speak to someone. Scammers will meet you outside of the building pretending to be an employee.
“Together we can help our community from falling for these frequent scams,” said Couch. “Please share this information with your loved ones.”
