With a formal ribbon-cutting sponsored by the Radford Chamber of Commerce, Central United Methodist Church this week announced plans to make its new all-purpose community center and gymnasium available for wide usage, beyond just for the membership and church youth.
In May 2016, the administrative board voted to erect a family life center to be connected to the rear of the current church building.
On Sept. 16, 2016, an official groundbreaking ceremony took place for construction of the new facility. An official dedication of the completed center was held in September 2017.
It was the wish of the board and people of CUMC that this building, when finished, would serve as an outreach center for the community.
It is already in use, but Dr. Bill Cook, who stewarded the overall project, says it makes sense to open the gym and its facilities to people and groups in the city, as available.
“We don’t want it to sit empty at times throughout the days and weeks,” he said. “CUMC wants the building to be in regular use, as a real community asset.”
Cook notes that those interested in using the center could include non-profit organizations, families, churches, clubs, sports groups, scouts and many others needing space for functions of almost any conceivable kind.
Facilities include tables, chairs, dividing walls, volleyball nets, a regulation basketball court, a full kitchen, smaller meeting and special use side rooms and more. The facility has access to parking at the church and behind the building.
