Monday’s Radford City Council meeting may have set a record for brevity, lasting about 15 minutes start to finish.

Three public hearings were held, with no comments made. The first was for a request to vacate a public right of way along Tyler Avenue, near Rock Road, by East Radford Development, Inc.

The second hearing was for comments on a change to Radford’s zoning ordinance. The third was for an appropriation ordinance allowing the city to “roll over” funds to the next budget year for budgeted projects, programs and grants that will not be completed by the end of the current fiscal year.

Council approved three appropriation ordinances allowing funds to be carried over to the upcoming budget year. City staff is in the process of completing the fiscal year 2018 budget. Council also approved Ordinance 1690 passing the change to the zoning ordinance which was the subject of the earlier public hearing. The ordinance makes slight changes to certain recreational uses with special use permits in residential districts.

During the City Council member comments portion of the meeting, Councilman Michael Turk congratulated the Radford High School Boys Basketball team for its state championship, as Mayor Dr. Bruce Brown held up a newspaper detailing the win, declaring Radford “title town.”

“We need a sign saying title town at the back entrance of the stadium,” said Brown.

Council’s next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, March 27.
