The Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) has awarded a total of $230,225 through its Responsive Grants program to 69 nonprofits serving the New River Valley.

This total represents the most the CFNRV has ever given out during its competitive grants process. Since 2002, the foundation has awarded more than $7 million in grants.

CFNRV’s Responsive Grants provide operating support, allowing recipient organizations to use the grant dollars where they are needed most. The applications came from organizations that support localities across the New River Valley focused in a variety of areas: animals, arts and culture, community and civic affairs, education, environment, health and wellness, poverty, and support, parenting, and care.
“At the Community Foundation, we understand how difficult it can be to raise operating dollars, and how critical those dollars are to fulfilling the nonprofit’s mission,” said Jessica Wirgau, chief executive officer of the CFNRV. “We hear regularly from grantees that they are seeing increased needs from clients, whether for food assistance, housing, educational support, or healthcare. To know that our funds can help meet that increased need, even in a small way, is extremely gratifying.”

These grants are made possible by many generous donors to the CFNRV. Individuals, families, and businesses establish endowments with the foundation that match their charitable interests to fund scholarships for students or grants for nonprofits. Endowed funds are invested with the goal of awarding scholarships and grants for generations to come.

For this year’s Responsive Grants, 59 different endowments contributed to the $230,225 total, with several making grants to multiple organizations. Through each step of the grants process, the CFNRV team works with volunteers on the grants distribution committee to read and score each application and match applicants to the funding available.

At a lunch reception at Hyatt Place Blacksburg on Wednesday, November 15, the CFNRV recognized each of the grantees. The event was sponsored by National Bank of Blacksburg, Atlantic Union Bank, First Bank and Trust Company, and Green Valley Builders.
A full list of this year’s grantees can be found below. The Responsive Grant application will open again in late May 2024 and applications from nonprofits serving the NRV are welcome to apply, as are units of government (such as libraries.) More information on the application process can be found at cfnrv.org/grants or by contacting the CFNRV team at cfnrv@cfnrv.org or 540-381-8999.
