The City of Radford will open a cooling center at the Radford Recreation Center located at 200 George Street. The center will be open from 12:00-8:00 Saturday June 30. All those seeking cool shelter at the Recreation Center are asked to enter through the main entrance of the Recreation Center.
Last night brought damaging storms with winds in excess of 80 mph for the City of Radford and much of Virginia. The event downed power lines and trees all over Radford. The City of Radford immediately responded with crews from the Electric Department, Public Works Department, Fire Department, Police Department and Water Department responding to the emergency. City crews worked vigorously throughout the night to restore power and clear debris from the roadways.
Most of the City of Radford power grid is now up and the Electric Department is currently working to restore individual power. Public Works is still working on clearing roadways and downed trees that are in the City “right of way.”
Radford Police report one storm related traffic accident on Tyler Avenue that caused one injury; there are no other reports of serious injury at the time. Please use extra caution when out on the roadways and trails over the next few days and be cautious of fallen trees and downed power lines.
Today brings another chance of record high temperatures and another chance of severe weather this evening. Citizens are encouraged to check on neighbors and family and friends, seeking cool shelter if without power. The American Red Cross will open a cooling center at Riverlawn Elementary School at noon today for all those without power and in need of cool shelter.
The City of Radford has extended the hours of the Seventeenth Street drop center for storm debris drop off to assist residents with clean up. The drop center on Seventeenth Street will be opened until 6 p.m. tonight and will be opened from 1-5 Sunday, July 1. The City will also open an auxiliary site at 601 West Main Street for storm debris drop off. This site will be open during the same hours as the Seventeenth Street Center. Beginning Monday July 2, the City of Radford will begin free brush pick up. Citizens are asked to move all brush to the front of your property for pick up.
