Jasmine Casarez and Maevyn Jones were given Big South Player of the Week honors for their esteemed efforts against Elon last week, the conference announced on Monday.
Casarez was named Big South Co-Attacking Player of the Week, while Jones was tabbed as the Big South Freshman of the Week.
“I’m very happy for Jasmine and Maevyn to get recognized this week,” head coach Ben Sohrabi said. “Both had good games versus Elon last Monday. Overall, I was most proud of our team effort to win two quality road games back to back. We’re focused on conference play now, with some important matches coming up.”
Casarez had a stellar game for the Highlanders as she found the back of the net twice in the lone game of the week due to Hurricane Florence. Casarez and the Highlanders took a 2-1 lead against Elon in the 83rd minute when she scored only her second goal of the season.
She wasn’t done and tallied the seventh multi-goal match of her career with a goal in the 89th minute that gave Radford a 3-1 advantage against the Phoenix. The Moreno Valley, Calif., native fired a team-leading five shots on Monday. Three of them were on target and two showed up on the scoreboard.
Jones played well even though she only had two tick marks in the stat column. However, those two tick marks were from an important assist in the final Casarez goal.
The assist gave Jones her only assist and point of the night and of the season. Late in the game, Jones made a move around a couple of defenders and found an open Casarez, who froze the keeper for the score.
Radford has tallied a player of the week honor for the fourth week in a row. The Highlanders have six total Big South weekly honors, which is the most in the Big South. It’s been a total team effort as no player has won multiple player of the week awards.
