Dr. Edith Houston Carter, 82, died on Oct. 14, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zeke and Ellie Hartsell Houston, of Charlottesville, N.C., and her husband, Dr. Fletcher Carter of Radford, VA. She will be missed by her many friends, former students, and her partner, J.R. Montgomery.
Dr. Carter entered an active role in musical activities of the New River. She played the violin or the viola with the New River Strings and with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra. Many area children and adults started lessons on string instruments under her direction. Dr. Carter served with the Board of the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and sought actively to bring musical presentations into area schools. She was a member of the Radford City Beautification Commission and the University Club.
Dr. Carter received her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and taught at New River Community College and Radford University. She remained active in the Association for Institutional Research, the Southern Association for Institutional Research, and the Virginia Educational Research Association. The Virginia Educational Research Association recognized her service by presenting her with its Outstanding Service Award.
A memorial service was conducted at Blacksburg United Methodist Church. on October 19, 2018. A visitation followed the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony, P.O. Box 242, Blacksburg, VA 24063. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home
