Carolyn Joanne McCoy Witten, 84, of Wytheville, passed into her heavenly eternal life on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.
Carolyn (Jo) was the daughter of Randolph “Ted” McCoy and Elizabeth “Tot” McCoy. She grew up alongside the New River in the McCoy community with her big brother R. D.
As a lifelong follower of Christ, Carolyn was a faithful Sunday School and VBS teacher and made Fort Chiswell Church of Christ her spiritual home for nearly 50 years.
A 1958 graduate of Radford College, Carolyn began her 40-year teaching career at Pearisburg High School. That is where she met the love of her life, a handsome seventh grade teacher named Morris Witten. The two were married in December 1959 and soon moved to Wytheville. She taught in the Wythe County school system, spending most of her career in the English classroom.
After her retirement, Carolyn and Morris enjoyed traveling with family and friends and visited dozens of cities and states, including Alaska and Hawaii.
Carolyn’s greatest joy was her family, and she is survived by her loving husband Morris, son Patrick and wife Makala, daughter Susan and husband Don VanDyne, and her five adored grandchildren: Delaney, Ben and wife Shaye, Alyson, Sam, and Jared. Also left to treasure her memory is brother-in-law Mike Witten and his wife, Margaret, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates gifts of flowers, but also encourages donations in Carolyn’s memory to the Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 1155 N 4th St. Wytheville, VA, or Good Samaritan hospice, 2408 Electric Rd Roanoke, VA 24018 or Goodsam.care. Their staffs provided tremendous comfort and support to Carolyn and her family for the past two years.
The family received friends Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, with a funeral service following in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, 150 Country Club Dr. S.W., Blacksburg Va., with minister Steve Canup officiating. A graveside service followed at West End Cemetery in Wytheville.
