RADFORD – Radford University hosted the annual American Legion’s Boys State program over the weekend, and the student participants donated food to support Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread.
RFDB Executive Director Gretchen Dee said the boys donated 2,130 items including canned food and cleaning supplies for the Radford-Fairlawn facility, and most of the items were canned food. The food will be used both at the facility to prepare the hot lunches RFDB provides and in the emergency food bags of non-perishable foods RFDB gives out to people in need.
Radford Fairlawn Daily Bread has been providing a hot lunchtime meal Monday through Friday for 30 years and to Meals on Wheels recipients since 2006.
Boys State is a summer leadership and citizenship program for high school juniors that focuses on exploring the mechanics of American government and politics, geared toward the state in which they are held. Boys and Girls State programs began in 1937.
