Volunteers from Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread visit with participants of Boys State as they drop off food donations Sunday on Radford University’s campus.

RADFORD – More than 400 rising senior high school boys arrived on the campus of Radford University Sunday to take part in the weeklong Virginia Boys State program, and most of them came loaded down with food to donate to Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread.

The American Legion runs the Boys State program, which teaches attendees about the workings of American government and citizenship. For the past several years, the Virginia state program has been held at Radford University and participants are asked to bring food donations for RFDB when they check in. This year, volunteers say their efforts were phenomenal.

“Today was huge for Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread with over 400 guys coming to Boys State at Radford University and bringing 2550 food and paper donations for us,” said Board member and volunteer Peggy Taylor. “We are overwhelmed with their generosity and so thankful.”

“It was a hectic day for our volunteers collecting donations at RU and also for those sorting them at RFDB,” Taylor continued. “Our pantries are full and we will also be sharing with the Women’s Resource Center, the Bobcats Backpack Program, and others.”

RFDB volunteer Regina Mayberry also commented about the day, and highlighted one family in particular.

“I just have to do a shout out to an amazing person,” Mayberry said on Facebook on Sunday. “Today a dad of one of the boys attending Boys State bought every single item on the list that the Boys State staff sent with the packet in the mail to the boys attending. It was a list of suggested food for us at Daily Bread. He bought every single item on that list, close to $200 worth. I know he will never likely see this post, but I just have to say thank you so much to that guy. You will never know how much this means or how much it so going to help. You are amazing. Thank you for your very helpful and thoughtful donation!”

RFDB provides a warm homecooked lunchtime meal to anyone who wants it, Monday through Friday, in its dining room on the ground floor of Long Way Brewing, located at 501 Second St. RFDB also provides Meals on Wheels service to homebound seniors.
