On Friday, Blacksburg High School continued its dominance by winning the Region 4D title for the fifth straight year.
Blacksburg combined for a 294 score to top second-place Salem by 12 strokes. Davis Young led Blacksburg with a 71, just four strokes behind individual medalist Trey Joyce of Salem, who shot a 5-under-par 72.
Blacksburg coach Rick Mattox called this season strange because it started in February.
“We lost the first week of practice due to uncooperative weather but have continued to get better with each match,” Mattox said. “We hope to have a good showing at state where the competition will be really tough.”
David Zhang and Sean Ruan finished second for Blacksburg with a score of 73, followed by Abby Hunter and Samantha Skinner who carted 77’s. Paul Duncan finished with a 78 in the event played at the Blacksburg Country Club.
The Bruins are headed back to the state match for a sixth straight year. That competition will be held on April 19 at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon.
Earlier in the week, Blacksburg took a seven-team match with a 292, ahead of Salem’s 318. Christiansburg finished a distant fifth with a 373 total. On April 8, Blacksburg also claimed a seven-team match with a 297 as Zhang carted a 65 on the home course.
