Week One of high school football is in the books, and most of the area teams are regrouping after losses.
Blacksburg and Radford were the only two to garner a victory as Eastern Montgomery, Auburn and Christiansburg took it on the chin.
Area early Top Five: 1) Glenvar, 2) Northside, 3) Salem, 4) Radford, 5) Blacksburg.
Week one player of week: Radford has found a new QB1, and Peyton Dobbins started the season in a fury. He threw for 278 yards in a win over George Wythe with three touchdowns. For his performance, Dobbins is the first week’s player of the week.
Rural Retreat at Eastern Montgomery
Rural Retreat rolled in a 46-7 win over Ft. Chiswell. Chaz Penwright scored four touchdowns and threw for another.
Eastern Montgomery took it on the chin 49-18 in a long trip to Holston. Chase Bierman did pass for 99 yards on a six of 20 night through the air.
Prediction: Rural Retreat 34, Eastern Montgomery 14.
Auburn at Smith Mt. Lake
Smith Mt. was shut out 49-0 by Riverheads.
Prediction: Auburn 21, Smith Mountain 20.
Christiansburg at Abingdon
Christiansburg’s Jeremiah Barnes was five of 11 for 55 yards in his first start at quarterback. Isaiah Cotto rushed for 73 yards on seven carries.
Abingdon picked up win number one 62-13 over John Battle.
Prediction: Abingdon 38, Christiansburg 14.
Giles at Radford
Giles was slow out of the gates, losing 40-8 to Blacksburg in Week One. Jalen Miller ran for 82 yards on 16 carries with a score.
Prediction: Radford 40, Giles 12
James River at Blacksburg
James River rolled in a 49-12 win against Auburn, while Blacksburg won 40-8 over Giles.
Blacksburg’s Sam Szefc three two touchdowns and ran for another. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 160 yards. Jaxon Keys rushed for 69 yards on 17 carries.
Prediction: Blacksburg 30, James River 7.
