Auburn High School attempted this weekend to keep all the hardware in the New River Valley. Rain wreaked havoc on state championships in Radford, so the Virginia high school moved the Class 1 soccer games to the turf in Christiansburg.
Auburn’s girls’ soccer team would bring home the gold with a 5-4 win on penalty kicks after the contest ended in a 0-0 tie. The boys’ team, who had defeated Galax for the regional title just a week ago, fell victim to the defending champs in their championship game as Galax took the 1-0 win.
Earlier in the day, the school’s tennis team rallied for a 5-4 win over Rappahannock for the school’s second spring title.
Molly McMichael and Haley Gordon took the state doubles title on Friday and then had to pull out a victory in the team competition on Saturday to give Auburn the overall team honor.
Auburn can make it four this spring when both the baseball and softball teams play later this week in title contests.
Meanwhile in the Class 4 girls’ tennis championship, Blacksburg fell 5-1 to Hanover County.
