Ralph L. (Charlie) Akers, age 91, of Blacksburg died, Friday, April 27, 2018 at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery. He was born in Blacksburg, VA on July 19, 1926 to the late Oakley Lee and Maggie Slusser Akers. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Melvin Akers, Sid Akers, James Akers and Frank Akers; one sister, Marie Mattox; and step son, Douglas Phillips.
Charlie retired from Virginia Tech after over 20 years. He was a member of Slussers Chapel Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Jacque M. Akers; step daughter and son-in-law, Jeanie Holley and husband, David; three step grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Lynda Ratcliffe, Iris and Danny Baker; numerous nieces and nephews; several best friends, Gary and Shelby Smith, Frank and Tammy Sizemore, Bob and Charlotte Holland, Arnold and Donna Lafon, Dale Echols, Pat and John Worrell, Willis and Judy Alls, Sid Smith and all the employees at Blacksburg Auto Parts, and Mike Jarrells and all the employees at North Main Auto.
Funeral Services will be conducted today, Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Gilbert and Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow at the Westview Cemetery. The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW Blacksburg, VA 24060
