BLACKSBURG — On Wednesday, June 25, the YMCA at Virginia Tech hosted the region’s first drone light show, marking a historic celebration of two major milestones: the annual GiveLocalNRV Giving Day and the YMCA’s 150th anniversary of service to the community.
Over 3,500 attendees gathered at the Blacksburg High School Bill Brown Football Stadium for an unforgettable evening filled with community spirit, entertainment, and philanthropy. The event also marked the official launch of the YMCA’s 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign, a major initiative that will help propel the Y into its next 150 years of service to the New River Valley.
“We are thrilled to bring this innovative experience to our community as we celebrate both the generosity of GiveLocalNRV and the YMCA’s 150-year legacy of service,” said Ryan Martin, CEO of the YMCA at Virginia Tech. “The drone light show symbolizes our commitment to the future—lighting up the sky and inspiring the next generation to continue building a strong, supportive community.”
Thanks to the generosity of the community, the YMCA raised an impressive $36,119 during the GiveLocalNRV fundraising efforts. These funds will directly support the Y’s programs and services, including youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility initiatives.
The custom-designed drone show, provided by Sky Elements, a nationally recognized team, was a breathtaking visual spectacle.
“The energy in the stadium was absolutely incredible, it was an unforgettable experience,” said a local attendee.
The pre-show entertainment featured the PanJammers, Blacksburg’s own steel drum band, and the music of DJ Earl Brown, building excitement as sunset approached. When the drones took flight, the crowd cheered, and audible gasps filled the air as the light show transformed the sky with stunning visuals, including a food truck and footballs soaring across the horizon!
In addition to the drone show, the evening provided a platform to launch the YMCA’s 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. This campaign aims to ensure the Y’s long-term sustainability and ability to serve the community for the next 150 years. Donations can be made through the YMCA’s website www.vtymca.org
“This event was a perfect combination of tradition and innovation,” said Ryan Martin. “The funds raised during GiveLocalNRV, combined with the launch of our 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign, position the YMCA to continue its mission of strengthening the community for another century and a half.”
The night ended on a high note, with guests leaving inspired by the vision for the future of the YMCA and the role the community will play in shaping it. The event served as a reminder of the YMCA’s enduring impact and the power of local giving.
