RADFORD – Radford Noon Rotary and Glencoe Mansion will host the closing ceremony of “A Tribute to Heroes” at Glencoe Mansion on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m.
The theme of the ceremony is “Making the City Come Alive: Honoring Our Heroes” and will recognize all the heroes in our community, from those in the military and first responders to those who’ve made a lasting impact on someone’s life. The event will mark the end of the third year of the flag display, “A Tribute to Heroes,” which has been on display since May.
The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an opening of bagpipe music provided by musician Jayna Sallis. The official ceremony follows at 6 p.m. and will include remarks from multiple members of the community, including Radford Mayor David Horton, City Council Member Jessie Foster, Rev. Diana Farrell White of First Baptist Church on Third Avenue, as well as remarks from the leadership of the Radford Noon Rotary and Glencoe Mansion. The ceremony will be followed by a reception on the museum grounds until 7:30 p.m.
The Radford Noon Rotary is a volunteer organization dedicated to advancing Radford through good deeds. A Tribute to Heroes is composed of nearly 200 flags individually sponsored by citizens and businesses of the community all seeking to honor heroes in their lives. The proceeds benefit multiple organizations, including Radford University Scholarships for Students from Radford High School, Vittles for Vets, Elf Shelf, the Women’s Resource Center, Beans and Rice, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and Glencoe Mansion.
Radford Noon Rotary President Jessee Ring says the display is a great way to being the community together to celebrate those important to us.
“A Tribute to Heroes is a simple but meaningful way to recognize people who have put service to others above self: veterans/military personnel, first responders, and others who have made a difference to our country, our community, or in our own lives,” he said. “Many of these heroes are unsung, but now they have a flag waving in their honor. A Tribute to Heroes is a great way for us all to come together in a very worthwhile endeavor- celebrating our heroes!”
The ceremony and reception are open to the public, and there is no admission charge. The Radford Noon Rotary and Glencoe Mansion invite all flag sponsors, those who have served in the military or as first responders, and those whose lives have been affected by special heroes to attend this event.
