During a closed session at last week’s Christiansburg Town Council meeting, Town Manager Randy Wingfield told the council he plans on retiring around the end of the year.

Wingfield has worked for the Town of Christiansburg for more than 27 years, he said on July 8, adding that it has been “a pleasure” and “an honor.”

Mayor Mike Barber said the town would have the position posted within the week to start searching for Wingfield’s replacement and start preparing for the transition.

Earlier in the meeting, the council approved Helen Lyman and Larry Day to the Planning Commission and reappointed Hil Johnson to the New River Valley Regional Commission Board of Commissioners for a three-year term.

Additionally, Barber was recommended to the Board of Supervisors to be reappointed to the Montgomery Regional Economic Development Commission for a three-year term.

Both Lyman and Day briefly spoke to the council before they were approved.

Lyman said she is a “forever student” who was involved with boards in Northern Virginia before she moved to Christiansburg in 2022.

Day, who has lived here since 2008, said he is invested in “shaping the kind of community we want to reside in.” He works with Habitat for Humanity locally, and values transparency and collaboration in decision making.

Barber said after both were approved that he believes “they bring a lot to the table,” and he noted that if he is not reelected in November, the council will appoint a new representative to the Regional Economic Development Commission.

The council also certified 2025-2026 fire officers during the July 8 meeting. Line Officers include Fire Chief Billy Hanks, Assistant Fire Chief Danny Yopp, Deputy Fire Chief Forest Redd, Captain Brandon Turner, Captain Pete Haislip, First Lieutenant Jordan Fenton, Second Lieutenant Mike Moore, Third Lieutenant B.J. Smith and Training Lieutenant Doug Adkins.

Fire Department Engineers include Noah Aliff, Nathan Brewbaker, Todd Chrisley, Justin Griggs, John Linkous, Daniel Musselman, Link Sheppard and Turner Ward.

The council also approved the purchase of a new Vacuum Street Sweeper for $399,500 and awarded a construction contract to D and M Painting Corporation for the Buffalo Water Tank Rehabilitation project totaling about $1.4 million.

A public hearing was set for the council to hear from property owners about allowing a single-chair beauty parlor as a major home occupation in a residential district.

Christiansburg Town Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Town Hall (100 E. Main St.). Meetings are also streamed and archived online at www.christiansburg.org/YouTube.
