RADFORD – The Radford Public Library hosted a festive event Tuesday, Dec. 3 to usher in the holiday season, commencing in the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree by Santa himself.
Santa read stories to children and kids-at-heart, while attendees enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa. The Grove United Methodist Church handbell choir performed and then led the children in the yearly much-anticipated children’s bell performance, during which kids receive color-coded bells and perform Christmas carols by ringing their bell when prompted by cards held up at the appropriate time.
The festivities then moved outside, where the massive tree lit up in colorful lights at the end of a countdown and the Wilderness Road Chorus led carols at the tree.
“Thank you everyone for making the Tree Lighting a huge success,” the library announced. “We would especially like to thank the Lamplighters for providing funds for cocoa and cookies as well as transit service.
“We would also like to thank Space Rabbit Coffee for providing hot chocolate, Radford Coffee Co. for making delicious cookies, the Grove United Methodist Church Handbell Choir for their lovely handbell performance, Wilderness Road Chorus for caroling at the tree, Radford City Police for traffic control, Radford Transit for shuttle service and Mayor David Horton for being our emcee.”
