As Veterans Day approaches, Virginia Tech is honored to celebrate the service, dedication, and sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and military members with commemorative gatherings and other special events. Join us as we pay tribute to our veterans and reaffirm our commitment to those who have defended our freedom.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will honor Veterans Day and the service of our nation’s military during a remembrance ceremony in the War Memorial Chapel, beginning at 10:30 a.m. At 11 a.m., a memorial wreath will be placed at the Pylons. Cadets will fire a rifle salute, and a bugler will play taps. Both events are open to the public.

Dining Services recognizes those who served in the U.S. military on Veterans Day by offering a free regular coffee, brownie, and poppy pin to Virginia Tech veterans, reservists, and active-duty students and employees.  A Missing Man Table will be placed at each location in memory of those service members who did not come home.

Nov. 11, 2:30 p.m., Newman Library 101S or online

Students from a Virginia Tech history course taught by Professor Tom Ewing will present projects examining how the 1918 influenza epidemic affected American soldiers during World War I. The projects examine quantitative evidence about the impact of the flu from the medical department of the U.S. Army and tell the stories of Virginia soldiers who died of disease during and after the final months of the war. Join in person or online. Posters from the class projects are on display in Newman Library and may be viewed online.

Heartland Heroes: A Veterans Day Tribute

Nov. 11, 4 p.m., 1045 Pamplin Hall

The Pamplin College of Business Veterans Day ceremony will feature guest speakers and an exclusive screening of the PBS docuseries “Life in the Heartland,” which features Veterans@VT members, including Pamplin student Sam Kennedy. Refreshments are provided, and attendees will receive a special edition Pamplin challenge coin to commemorate this day of recognition.

Veterans Day gifts and slideshow

Veterans Day gifts will be presented to employee veterans the week of Nov. 4 in recognition of their service. In Blacksburg, cadets will hand-deliver gifts. For employees at other Virginia Tech locations, the gifts will be mailed.
