Arnold Allen Akers, 73, of Meadow Bluff, W.Va., and Dublin, Va., passed away Oct. 22, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter R. Akers; mother, Elverta Ward Akers; grandparents, Walter and Emma Russell Akers, James Garfield and Nora Clinton Ward; and brother, Bill Leon Akers.
Mr. Akers is survived by his loving wife, Karen H. Akers; four daughters, Sarah Beth Davis (John Oliver III), Mary Katherine Johnson (Augustus Johnson IV), Bobbi Metz, and Megan Price (Ken Price); and three grandchildren, Blair Hodges (Jacob Hodges), Bradley Metz, and Jackson Davis. He is also survived by his brother, James Akers; sister, Sharon McGuire (Michael McGuire); and three great-grandchildren, Addison, Parker and Maisy Hodges.
Mr. Akers served for over 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service. A devout Baptist, he served the Lord at Dublin Baptist Church as choir director until moving to the family farm in West Virginia. He was involved in various church committees, particularly enjoying his time with the kitchen committee, where he helped prepare many Wednesday night meals. Upon moving to the farm, the Akers family transferred their membership to First Baptist Church in Rainelle, where Mr. Akers continued to serve as choir director until his cancer diagnosis.
Mr. Akers had a passion for cooking and making wedding cakes for friends and family. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and farming, where he raised chickens, turkeys, and ducks on his family farm. He also loved cheering for Virginia Tech football.
The family will receive friends 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at the Dublin Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Terry Golden and Matt Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Dublin Cemetery in Dublin.
