RADFORD – Radford Public Library and the Lamplighter Board recently celebrated becoming local program partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a partnership based on a mutual mission to share a love of reading.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting resource that supports literacy by mailing free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income. Lamplighters, who are the fundraising volunteers for the Radford Public Library, are financially providing this offering to Radford children. Lamplighters also fund all library programming for children, teens, adults and seniors at the library.
Radford Public Library celebrated the kick-off of this international literacy program with Lamplighter Board members Caroline Gaskins, Ann Walker, Barbara Barry and Barry Anderson. In attendance were Radford City Manager David Ridpath, Radford City Mayor David Horton, Radford Vice Mayor Seth Gillespie, Radford Chamber of Commerce Director and Library Board member Dan McKinney, Library Board member Michael Canestrari, former Mayor Thomas Starnes and many community families.
The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center was a special guest for the event and provided teachings about several live animal ambassadors including a bat, kestrel and turtle. Children under five years registered for DPIL during this event and are excited to receive their first book, The Little Engine That Could, in the mail. A ribbon cutting with the Radford Chamber of Commerce marked this significant event with all in attendance.
Radford Public Library offers thousands of books for all ages for borrowing. With Imagination Library, Radford children under five years of age get to build their libraries at home, keeping the books they receive in the mail from DPIL. Radford Public Library and the Lamplighters partner with Imagination Library to ensure all Radford children can have a great selection of books at home.
Register at home at imaginationlibrary.com or come to the library for help. Donations to Lamplighters, Inc. can be made at the library or online at imaginationlibrary.com.
