Virginia Tech and Saint Joseph’s are set to clash in the 2024 Holiday Hoopfest, December 21, at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., as announced by tournament officials Monday afternoon.
It will mark the seventh all-time meeting between the two former Atlantic 10 Conference rivals. Each side has won three times. Tech last squared off against SJU on Dec. 22, 2015 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Hokies dropped a 79-62 decision. Tech returns to The Palestra for the first time since it went 1-1 in the 2009 Philly Hoop Group Classic. VT is 5-16 all-time in the City of Brotherly Love.
“Playing Saint Joseph’s at The Palestra in December as part of Holiday Hoopfest is a tremendous opportunity for our team,” Tech head coach Mike Young said. “It’s a historic venue with such great basketball tradition, and facing a quality opponent like St. Joe’s will be a great test for us. We’re excited for the challenge and look forward to competing in the cathedral of college basketball.”
Senior point guard Hysier Miller, a Philly native, will get an opportunity to play in his hometown for the Hokies’ 2024 nonconference finale. Prior to transferring to Tech, Miller competed for three seasons at Temple.
The Hawks finished the 2023-24 season at 21-14 overall and 9-9 in A-10 play. Like the Hokies, they advanced to the NIT where they suffered a 75-72 overtime loss to Seton Hall in the opening round.
