RADFORD – The Radford City Police Department is offering tips to the public for preventing property and other types of crime this summer.

“As we welcome the first day of summer, the Radford City Police Department would like to remind everyone to stay safe and vigilant during the warm months ahead,” the department recently announced. “Remember, staying alert and taking preventive measures can go a long way in keeping our community secure. Have a wonderful and safe summer!”

Here are some essential crime prevention tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer:

  1. Lock doors and windows: Whether you’re at home or away, always lock your doors and windows. This simple step can deter opportunistic burglars.
  2. Secure your valuables: Don’t leave valuable items in plain sight, either in your home, car, or yard. Store them in secure locations.
  3. Be cautious with strangers: Be cautious when dealing with strangers at your door. Always ask for identification from service providers and don’t let unknown individuals into your home.
  4. Light up your property: Use outdoor lighting around your home to deter burglars. Motion-sensor lights are particularly effective.
  5. Vacation safety: If you’re going on vacation, don’t advertise your absence on social media. Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property and collect your mail.
  6. Protect your car: Always lock your car and never leave valuables inside. Park in well-lit areas and consider using a steering wheel lock for added security.
  7. Stay aware in public spaces: Be mindful of your surroundings in public spaces such as parks and beaches. Keep your belongings secure and avoid leaving items unattended.
  8. Watch for scams: Be wary of summer-related scams such as fake travel deals or door-to-door sales scams. Always verify offers through trusted sources.
  9. Report suspicious activity: If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it to the police. Your vigilance can help prevent crime in our community.
  10. Know your neighbors: Building a strong community network can enhance safety. Get to know your neighbors and look out for each other.

For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergency situations, contact 540-731-3624.
