RADFORD – The Woman’s Club of Radford has expanded its literacy program to children served through the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley.
The Woman’s Club met April 11 at the Radford Public Library. Laura Beth Weaver, Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley spoke about the non-profit organization’s programs and services to victims of sexual and domestic abuse.
Since the Resource Center was formed in the mid-seventies it has had more than one million hours of advocacy serving women, men, and children. The Center’s Immediate Crisis services
include a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, Emergency Advocacy and Emergency Shelter. Counseling Services, Legal Advocacy, and a Transitional Housing Program are some of the sexual assault and domestic violence programs. Children are often served in emergency shelter, which is how the Woman’s Club of Radford can help Center clients.
The Woman’s Club’s mission is promoting children’s literacy with the Reading is Fundamental program at McHarg, Snowville, and Riverlawn Elementary Schools and the Babies into Books program at Carillion New River Medical Center. The literacy program has expanded to the Women’s Resource Center with free books provided for the children from infants through middle school. The children will be able to keep the book they choose.
