The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team earned its highest preseason ranking in program history Tuesday when the Associated Press released its preseason poll and ranked the Hokies No. 13, which eclipsed the No. 17 ranking achieved by the 1999 team.

The ranking also marks just the third time the Hokies will begin the basketball season a a ranked squad: this season, last season, and that 1999 squid.

The Hokies ended the 2022 season ranked 16th in the poll after a record-breaking season that saw them win 13 ACC games and five games against ranked teams. Elizabeth Kitley, a 6’6” senior center, was named the ACC Player of the Year last season and 5’ 9” guard Aisha Sheppard, a graduate student, broke the school scoring record and the ACC’s 3-point record.

The Preseason All-ACC Team, the Newcomer Watch List, and the predicted order of finish for the Hokies and their peers in the conference was announced live on the ACC Network’s ACC PM program on Wednesday Oct. 19..

The Hokies will open the season at home on Monday Nov. 7, when they welcome Mount St. Mary’s to Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum for a 5 p.m. tip-off against the Mountaineers.
