Fine Arts Center launches fundraiser

The Fine Arts Center is raising $15,000 for new flooring in its historic building.

Older buildings sometimes need a little extra TLC.

As part of Pulaski’s Historic Commercial District, the current home of the Fine Arts Center was one of the first buildings built on Main Street and has served as home to several businesses since 1898. The Fine Arts Center moved into its current home in 1982 and has become an anchor in the downtown area, seeing many changes over time.

Last year the center received a facelift as part of a revitalization project through the town. This year, the work is moving indoors.

More than 15 years ago, the center was the beneficiary of a generous donation of carpet and padding. The carpet has served the center well with tens of thousands of visitors treading across it over the years to view exhibits, take classes, or listen to performances. The carpet survived some repairs in the past, but the time has come for a new facelift, or perhaps more appropriately a “floorlift,” to give the floor a new start.

The carpet will be replaced with new waterproof vinyl flooring that will stand up better to the foot traffic, be easy to clean, and will see the center into its fifth decade of service to the arts in the community. The center has launched a fundraising campaign to offset some of the cost. The fundraising goal is $15,000 to cover the flooring materials and installation, some repairs to the subfloor, and a new coat of paint throughout the gallery.

Donations can be made on the center’s website at facnrv.org/donate or in person at the Ccnter when it reopens later this month. The Fine Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.

The Fine Arts Center is located at 21 West Main St. in the Pulaski Historic Commercial District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The center is supported, in part, by funding from the Town of Pulaski, Pulaski County, the C. E. Richardson Benevolent Foundation, the Randolph Foundation, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts as well as through membership and donations.
