Christmas came early this year for Radford City’s Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery. “For some time now our wish list has included area rugs for the Mansion’s rooms on the main level,” says Scott Gardner, the facility’s director.
Santa in the person of the William and Giuliana Taylor family has made that wish come true with the gift of three rugs. “It’s a great way to remember my parents,” said Frank Taylor, the Taylors’ son who recently saw the rugs in their new home.
According to Gardner, the Taylors were truly an international couple with William hailing from New Zealand and Giuliana from Italy. They eventually called Radford home where they filled their residence with a collection of antiques and art objects from around the world.
“Now through the generosity of their family, part of their rug collection can be enjoyed at Glencoe Mansion,” Gardner said.
Two of the rugs are handwoven Orientals with geometric designs and medallions. “They are an incredible donation,” says Gardner. “It’s hard to believe that they haven’t always been here.”
Glencoe Mansion has been open as a museum since 1998 and has been able to grow only through support from the community, said Gardner. “This is Radford’s museum, and I feel pride when I tell visitors that everything they see here is through the kindness of residents from throughout the region.” The house itself was donated by Kollmorgen, one of the city’s leading manufacturers.
Built in 1875 by Gabriel and Nannie Radford Wharton, Glencoe has evolved into a three-in-one museum experience featuring the historic residence, exhibits, and an art gallery. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
