Bringing the Inside Out – Creating Outdoor Living Spaces

Since there are no signs of COVID-19 disappearing anytime soon, The VT Hahn Garden is presenting a series of online events. The first event is being co-hosted by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 7 – 8 p.m.

The Hahn Horticulture Garden is working with two distinguished VT alumni, Steve Grigg, former owner of Grigg Design and Mike Hildebrand, owner of James River Nurseries, to host a virtual event that will feature tips for creating outdoor living spaces and expanding usable living space into one’s backyard.

Steve and Mike will share some of their favorite projects and Scott Douglas, the director of the Hahn Horticulture Garden, will discuss areas in the garden that illustrate design elements that can be incorporated into any landscape. Register at https://aimsbbis.vt.edu/CALSOutdoorLiving.

Fall Waterway Clean-up volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Clean Valley Council’s fall waterways clean-up; 8 a.m.to noon. This is a surf and turf event, so volunteers may choose to work in their own neighborhoods, at a park or at a special site if they can’t work near a stream or a river.

Small fries certainly should not be working on the rivers, but they can help in a park or by a small stream. Supplies are provided. To volunteer, download a registration form at clleanups@cleanvalley.org. and mail it to the Clean Valley Council, 1327 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke VA 34015 or PO Box 3325 Roanoke, Va. 24015.

Library Card Sign-up month at the Radford Library

Do you have a library card? DC’s Wonder Woman is embarking on a new mission to champion the power of a library card as Library Card Sign-up Month Honorary Chair. Per the American Library Association, “Wonder Woman makes a perfect ambassador to support the value of learning and the role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities through education.” Radford Public Library has a new logo, so bring your old card in and exchange it for a new one with a fancy logo.

Basketball Courts Closed

Blacksburg Community Center basketball courts are closed until further notice.

Christiansburg Annual Photo of the Year Contest

The Town of Christiansburg is sponsoring its third annual Photo of the Year Contest. Judges will select a photo of the year to hang in Christiansburg Town Hall. The town plans to possibly feature other submissions from this year and years past in a town-themed calendar.

To be considered for Photo of the Year, a photo submission must be either a .JPG or .PNG file, between 8 – 20 megapixels large (minimum 2,550 x 3,300 pixels). All other submissions must be at least 1.5 megapixels large. Please do not resize your photos prior to submission. All photos must be taken within the Town of Christiansburg limits.

All photos must be submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2020 to info@christiansburg.org. All submissions must include a completed submission form available at www.christiansburg.org/photooftheyear. For additional information, visit www.christiansburg.org/photooftheyear or contact info@christiansburg.org.

Grab and Go services at the Radford Public Library

Unfortunately, due to the high number of positive COVID-19 cases in Radford, the Radford Public Library is not offering in-library visits at this time. In-house browsing, Computers on Call, and passport appointments are temporarily suspended out of an abundance of caution in an effort to keep library patrons and staff safe.

The good news is that Grab and Go services continue for hold pick-ups as well as print pick-ups. Patronscan use the MyLibro app to search RPL’s catalog and place holds as well as schedule pick-up times. This can also be done via phone by calling 540 731-3621. For Grab and Go prints, email the documents to be printed to rad.lib@radfordva.gov, then call 731-3621 to make sure the documents are received and then schedule a time to pick them up at the building entrance. Prices are the same as usual ($0.10 for black and white, $0.25 for color), and exact change is appreciated when possible.

Literacy League: Be A Reader

The Radford Public Library is calling all reading superheroes: This is your chance to keep reading, win prizes, keep picking up free, weekly Grab and Go Crafts, and stay connected to the library this fall. Go to the Read Squared link to participate online and/or download the READsquared app. You can also get a paper reading log (or print your own) to track your reading mission to unlock superheroes for your Literacy League team-up.

Some quests involve reading a banned book, reading a fairy tale or reading something spooky. Prizes include superhero coloring books, crayons, superhero bobbleheads, superhero wristbands, and pops.

Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Passport service

MFRL is processing passport applications by appointment only. There is a processing delay, so if you are planning ahead now is the time to apply for your passport. Call (540) 382-6969, ext. 210 to schedule an appointment.
