Jonathan Woods of Radford made par on the first hole of a play-off to win the 17-18 age group Tuesday on the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour. Blacksburg’s Pierce Campbell won the 13-14 age group competition. Liam Smith of Elliston won in the 9-and-under age group.
Tuesday’s play was on the Fincastle golf course in Bluefield, WVa. Sponsored by the Orthopaedic Center of the Two Virginias, 90 young players tested their skills on the challenging course.
The tour began in 1999 as an extension of the junior program at what was then known as Fincastle Country Club. With a large number of juniors, club pro Vic Sorrell and many interested parents put together a small regional tour. Now in its 22nd season, the tour continues to offer the various benefits of golf to these young players.
Tour Dewayne Belcher said it is always a treat to return to Fincastle. “It is like coming home and always brings back many fond memories of those who have learned the game of golf,” Belcher said. “The Blue Ridge Junior Tour is very appreciative of the continued support of junior golf at Fincastle.”
Tyler Sayers of Marion won the 15-16 age group competition. Sayers edged Blackburg’s Samantha Skinner and Sean Ruan by making par on the first hole of a 3-way playoff.
Blacksburg’s Campbell broke through the competitive field and recorded his first victory on the tour with a 5-over-par 75. Campbell had placed second in the previous tournament at Wytheville but prevailed this time by playing the back nine holes in 1-under par. Jack Skinner of Blacksburg finished second with a score of 80. Major Ewing of Blacksburg, Grayden Laird of Galax and Jonah Willson of Daniels, WV tied for third with scores of 82.
Grant McCall of Richlands shot 1-under par 34 to win the 10-12 age group.
Liam Smith of Elliston shot a 48 to win the age group. J.J. Robertson of Blacksburg was second with a 53. Marco Beato of Blacksburg was third with a score of 56.
The tour returns to action July 15 at Holston Hills Golf Club in Marion.
