Water Department Plant Operator Chris Campbell receives an award for water quality excellence from members of Radford City Council at Monday’s council meeting.

The award is a Virginia Optimization Program Gold Award from the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water. The city has won silver and bronze awards in the past but this is its first gold award. The award is based on a 12-month analysis of data of turbidity levels in the city’s water supply and meeting the “Virginia Optimization Program goals for filtration and clarification during 2018.”

“This award puts the city’s water system in the top five in Virginia out of 133 systems,” said Radford Mayor David Horton in announcing the award at Monday’s Radford City Council meeting.

The city has made significant strides over the years of the award program, ranking 33rd in 2009 and 19th in 2010, for example.

Water Department Plant Operator Chris Campbell was in attendance at Monday’s meeting to receive the award from members of city council.

“Thank you and your team for making sure we have high quality water despite all of the flooding and other issues you’ve had to deal with, “ said Horton.
