RADFORD – Radford Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Chief Rodney Haywood and members of his crew were honored by Radford City Council at its recent meeting in recognition of Emergency Medical Services Week.
Last year, the Radford Fire Department took on EMS duties for the city, ending a long-term contract with Carilion to provide those services. The crew now has a shiny new red ambulance to help answer EMS calls, which was also unveiled at the meeting.
City Council passed a proclamation recognizing EMS Week in the City, designated as May 19-25.
“Emergency Medical Services are a vital public service and the members of Radford’s emergency medical services team are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” the proclamation reads.
The city’s new ambulance is displayed at the Radford Farmers Market on Saturday in recognition of EMS week.
“Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury,” it continues. “Emergency medical services have grown to fill a gap by providing important out of hospital care, including preventive medicine, follow-up care and access to tele-medicine.”
“The members of Radford’s emergency medical services team, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their life-saving skills. It is appropriate to recognize the value and accomplishments of EMS service providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week.”
