The NRV TimeBank and Habitat for Humanity of the NRV will be celebrating Earth Day 2019 by offering a free and sustainable solution for local citizens to combat ‘throw-away’ culture on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Habitat Restore (1675 N. Franklin Street) in Christiansburg.
The ReStore has become a popular local source for new and used building supplies, home furnishings, flooring and ReColor, a 100 percent recycled paint.
Since the first Repair Café hosted in October 2017, several hundred household items, including furniture, small appliances and clothing, have been given a new life, and been saved a trip to the local landfill.
The Repair Cafe is a free event that promotes repair as an alternative to throwing things away.
Visitors bring their broken items in need of repair and the event provides the tools, materials and expertise to help get them back into shape.
The following work-stations will be available at the April 27 event:
- Small appliance repair
- Sewing station
- Furniture repair
- Knife sharpening
- Plant re-potting and education
- Tech repair
Each attendee is allowed to submit up to three items for repair.
ReStore also houses The Tool Lending Library giving New River Valley resident homeowners and do-it-yourselfers access to power tools and hand tools without buying them. Tool Lending libraries provide an opportunity to use expensive, unique and specialty tools without a large monetary investment.
The library, the Repair Café, Timebank, and ReStore itself serve as a meeting place for exchanging ideas and advice, while providing the means to make ideas reality.
