In a wild game that lasted four hours and 21 minutes, the Radford University baseball team was edged by the host Wofford Terriers, 10-9, in ten innings on Sunday evening.
Radford (2-4) recorded eight hits and received 11 walks in the contest but left 13 runners on base to come up just short of their second victory of the day.
Second baseman David Bryant hit his first career homer and drew two walks in the contest, while catcher Straton Podaras (1-for-3, RBI, 2 runs, 3 BB) and designated hitter Adam Whitacre (1-for-2, 2 RBI) led the offensive attack.
The Terriers chased Radford starter Cole Dunn after just 2.1 innings as he yielded six hits and six earned runs in his second career start.
Radford led 2-0 after scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Wofford starter Hayes Heinecke walked the first three batters he faced. First baseman J.D. Mundy delivered an RBI sacrifice fly and Podaras followed with an RBI single.
An RBI sacrifice fly by right fielder Andrew Szamski scored Bryant to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.
Wofford (3-2) responded with three runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 6-3 advantage.
Bryant drilled his first Highlander home run with a shot over the right-center field wall in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Terriers, however, scored two more in the bottom of the frame on a pair of hits off reliever Cameron Fritz.
Radford battled back with three runs in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Colby Higgerson lashed a two-out RBI single and Whitacre followed with a line drive RBI single to right. The Highlanders cut the deficit to 8-7 after center fielder Kyle Butler was hit by a pitch.
The Highlanders scored two more times in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 9-8 advantage. Higgerson hit a pop-fly that was dropped by third baseman John Dempsey. Whitacre then delivered an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Podaras with the go-ahead run.
Wofford sent the game into extra innings with a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a walk, an error and an RBI groundout.
Higgerson nearly put the visitors ahead with a two-run homer in the top of the tenth but his long drive to left was caught at the wall.
The Terriers won the game in the bottom of the frame after an infield single, a walk, and an RBI single to left.
