Section of Huckleberry closed

A section of the Huckleberry Trail in Christiansburg running from Cambria Street through the Lions Gate neighborhood to the Food Lion Shopping Center will close for repairs on Monday, Feb. 4, weather permitting. Repairs are expected to take about a month to complete and the trail will remain closed during this time. Inclement weather may delay work.

Fundraiser remembers Harrington

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students will try to win back their title against a team of Carilion Clinic residents, attending physicians, and Jefferson College of Health Sciences students in the seventh annual Docs for Morgan basketball challenge.

This fundraiser supports the Morgan Dana Harrington Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

The event takes place Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Patrick Henry High School gymnasium, located at 2120 Grandin Road.

This year’s challenge marks the 10th year since the disappearance and murder of Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student who had a bright future ahead of her as a teacher.

A.D. to address nutrition

Jennie Zabinsky is the Associate Athletics Director for Sports Nutrition for Virginia Tech Athletics and a registered dietitian. She believes long-term health and well-being involves not only what you eat – but your thoughts and feelings surrounding food and your body.

Grounded in the fundamentals of a non-diet approach, Jennie will discuss the difference between diet mentality and intuitive eating. She will help to understand how to let go of food rules and build a compassionate and flexible mindset around one of life’s biggest pleasures – eating!

When: Feb. 14, 3-4 p.m.

Where: Virginia Tech Roanoke Center, 108 N. Jefferson St., 7th floor, Roanoke VA 24016

This event is free, but seating is limited. Email Martha Franklin at mpfrankl@vt.edu or register online at http://bit.ly/vtsnacks to reserve your spot by Feb. 11.

Concord now ninth

The Concord University men’s basketball team moved up one spot in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Rankings after a 2-0 week.

CU defeated Charleston 99-96 in double overtime during the week and staved off UVa.-Wise 83-82 on Saturday at the Carter Center.

The top four remained unchanged as Indiana (Pa.) (60 points and six first-place votes) stayed at number one. West Liberty (54 points), Virginia State (47) and Fairmont State (43) were spots two through four. Slippery Rock checked in number five (35).

Pre-Season All-ACC

Virginia Tech pitcher Carrie Eberle was named to the Preseason All-ACC Softball Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Eberle, whose selection to the team was voted on by the ACC’s head coaches, is the only returning player in the conference to lead her team in both ERA and home runs. Her 1.65 ERA ranked third in the ACC last spring and her eight home runs were tied for 12th.

In the circle, Eberle ranked third in the ACC in opponent’s batting average (.182), tied for third in complete games (19), seventh in innings pitched (173.2), tied for first in home runs allowed (3) and 11th in strikeouts (120).

Lacrosse number 14

Boston College, the 2018 NCAA Runners-Up, claimed the top spot in the 2019 IWLCA Division I Coaches Pre-Season Poll, claiming 22 of the 25 available first place votes. The Eagles are coming off a 22-2 season last year and are followed closely by the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina, who are tied at number two in the poll.

The defending NCAA Champions, James Madison University, checks in at number four after an historic 2018 campaign. Stony Brook University is ranked fifth, followed closely by Florida, Northwestern, and Princeton. Loyola and Penn round out the top ten in the pre-season rankings by the coaches.

The ACC landed two teams in the top ten, and seven of eight members are ranked in the pre-season Top 25, including Virginia Tech at number 14.

The Big Ten claimed two top ten spots, and four total teams in the top 25 mix, while the Ivy League and PAC-12 each landed three teams in the poll. The CAA and Big East each place two squads in the poll.
