Hokie ACC player of week
Virginia Tech guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week ending Nov. 18.
The sophomore from Toronto, Canada was named Most Valuable Player of the Charleston Classic after scoring 20-or-more points in all three games and leading Virginia Tech to the tournament championship. In Thursday’s win over Ball State, Alexander-Walker led the Hokies with 21 points and pulled down six rebounds. In Friday’s semifinal win over Northeastern, Alexander-Walker led the Hokies with 20 points and a career-high seven assists.
In Sunday’s 89-83 championship game win over No. 23 Purdue, Alexander-Walker once again paced the Hokies in scoring with a season-high 25 points and also had seven rebounds. He averaged 22.0 ppg in the three Classic games, leading Virginia Tech to its first tournament title since the 2008 Holiday Festival.
Lady Highs in NIT
With less than a week before Selection Sunday, officials with the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championships have selected the Radford women’s volleyball team for postseason play. The Highlanders, who placed second in the Big South this season, are among the first set of Automatic Qualifiers to confirm their place in the event.
More teams will be added throughout the week; the rest of the field (expected to be 32 teams overall) will be determined after Sunday’s release by the NCAA of its 64-team field.
For 2018, the first group of AQ teams includes: Alabama A&M (23-15, SWAC), Appalachian State (22-8, Sun Belt), Bowling Green (19-11, MAC), Central Arkansas (26-6, Southland), Fresno State (21-9, Mountain West), Radford (21-6, Big South), and Tulane (24-8, American).
Selection – Nov. 25 with Round 1 & 2– Nov. 29-30 & Dec. 1-2, Round 3 – Dec. 5-7, Semifinals – Dec. 7-9, Championship – Tuesday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. ET.
McClean honored by Big South
Radford freshman guard Bryonna McClean has been named the Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.
McClean provided a major boost off the bench in the Highlanders remarkable come-from-behind win against East Tennessee State on Nov. 15.
The Virginia Beach, Virginia native hit 4-of-5 field goal attempts en route to a season-high 12 points against the Bucs at the Dedmon Center. The Princess Anne product also corralled four rebounds and dished four assists, helping to spark the team after they trailed by as many as 23 points. She added six points on 3-of-7 shooting against No. 17 ranked N.C. State on Sunday afternoon.
